July 8, 2010: Celebrate Our Nation’s Parks!
With almost 400 national parks across the country and the U.S. territories, there’s sure to be one in your area! The National Park Service is dedicated to maintaining our nation’s parks and creating a safe environment for all visitors. National parks are not only preserved natural environments, like Yellowstone and the Everglades, but also historic sites and monuments, like Alcatraz and the St. Louis Arch. Many national parks are free or low cost and are a great option for school trips or family vacations. To locate a park near you, use the Find a Park option on the National Park Service website. You can search by name, location, activity, topic or state. Travelers can check out resources from the National Park Service to help them plan their trip. To get the most out of your trip, browse suggested itineraries, as well as National Heritage Areas and highlighted hot spots, like lighthouses and archaeology museums and sites. If you’re a teacher or community leader and would like to plan a field trip, perform a community service project, or learn more about activities sponsored by the National Park Service, you can use the Interpretation and Education resources to help you get started. There’s plenty to see, learn and enjoy at our nation’s parks. Enjoy these scenic areas and learn something new about our nation’s history at the same time!
